At the request of Frederick Scalera, New Jersey State Assemblyman and Chair of the Homeland Security and State Preparedness Committee, CCICADA researchers Tamra Carpenter and Jack Jarmon appeared before the Committee on November 15, 2010, to describe the mission and work of the Center. Carpenter and Jarmon discussed the overarching goal of CCICADA, which is to empower decision makers by enhancing the quality and usability of information that originates across various media and diverse sources. A concurrent goal is to enrich the computational, mathematical and quantitative education of future data scientists for a more robust and sustainable work force.

The occasion to speak before state legislators was an opportunity to discuss and demonstrate how DHS funding not only supports research at the state university, but also impacts the security and well being of New Jersey’s citizens. Earlier in the session, the Committee completed amending legislation to set protocols and procedures that would help coordinate emergency management in the event of a catastrophic event or natural disaster. “Our research program is relevant to the bill released from the Homeland Security and State Preparedness Committee today,” said Dr. Carpenter, noting that CCICADA is developing mathematical models for stadium evacuation and evacuation of at-risk populations during heat events.
Legislators also expressed interest in CCICADA’s development and implementation of educational programs, interaction with first responders and end users, and the Center’s involvement with minority serving institutions.
